... and finally part 3, because good things come in threes (or at least it seems that way to me these days).

Jenny and Scott are getting married in a few weeks at Scott's parents' private residence in Napa. I call it the splendor palace. Modern architecture, artfully complemented by rustic elements that blend into the vineyard landscape... think homegrown olive oil as favors, moss-covered dessert bar and wooden platters, oversized sunflowers and poppies, burlap... now you see the relevance of these invitations?

The bride, Eleanor, loved our Woodlands Affair invitation style, but was afraid the chipboard booklet might be too casual for her church ceremony and reception at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins. She also loved the illustration from our Lovebirds Story style. We decided to take the best of the 2 styles and printed the final piece on luxurious cotton paper. We then matched the ribbon colors to her bridesmaid dresses. Problem solved.

Alan Fletcher would have been 77 years old today. I remember encountering his book "The Art of Looking Sideways" several years ago, and marveling at the wit and diversity of his work. Today, he remains considered as one of the most influential designers in the world.

I had to post this in honor of fashion week. Fashion illustrators fascinate me. I love to watch them sketch and envy the heck out of their skills. Their flying pens that create seemingly loose and jumbled lines always result in deliberate and breathtaking images.

The work of David Downton made me stop in my tracks. In his interview, this question was posed, "Let's talk about your work methods. How do you arrive at the elimination of detail?"

His response:
For me this is the hardest and the most interesting thing. In order to leave something out, first you have to put it in, or at least understand how every thing works. I do dozens of drawings on to layout paper taking the best from each one as I go. When the drawing looks right I start to eliminate, to de-construct if you like. I keep working until it looks spontaneous.
